Solar Shed Light Selection

by blape on July 24, 2010

Solar shed lights are a great way to provide light without the hassle of running electrical wiring. Solar powered shed lights typically use light emitting diodes (LED), which use considerably less energy than traditional light bulbs. Many units come with a motion sensor to automatically turn on the light as someone approaches.

When buying a solar shed light, it is important to consider the light output of the bulb, battery life, and the size and efficiency of the solar panel.

Before you begin shopping, you will need to perform a very basic solar site evaluation to ensure that your shed is located in an area where it will be possible to generate enough solar electricity.

Ideally, you will want to install the panels of your solar light on the most southern facing portion of your shed’s roof. If the roof does not point due south, you should be fine. Shade is the biggest concern when installing a solar powered lighting. If your shed is located under a thick tree canopy, a solar powered shed light will not be an option. Make sure that where you are installing your unit receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight every day.
