Rug Cleaning Without the Harsh Chemicals

by Tim on March 7, 2010

Cleaning rugs is a notoriously hard job. They stain more easily than other floor types and rug fibers trap particles that stay embedded even after vacuuming. Many traditional rug cleaning products contain harmful synthetic chemicals that may pose a health risk to you and your family. If using rug cleaning services, it is important to ensure that they use environmentally friendly cleaning products.

Rug CleaningOf the thousands of petro-chemicals found in common household cleaning products, only one third have been tested for their impact on human health. Already, the air inside your home is many times more polluted than the air outside. There is no reason to further contaminate your indoor environmental quality with the rug cleaning products and services you use. Many of the green techniques shared hear apply to both oriental rug cleaning and area rug cleaning.

When selecting a rug cleaning service, make sure that they use environmentally friendly cleaning products. To find a green rug cleaning service in your area, use Google’s local search service by typing in “rug cleaning” followed by your zip code. Google will display a list of all the rug cleaning services in you area. Browse the websites of these companies to see if they offer a green alternative to their normal service. If you live in a big city, there may be an exclusively green cleaning service in your area. If there are no green rug cleaning services in your area, consider purchasing green rug cleaning products and asking if a company will use them instead of their normal products. These products should be available at your local home improvement store or grocery store, as major companies such as Johnson and Johnson to smaller, exclusively green companies such as Seventh Generation produce these products.

Although there are many green rug cleaning products available on the market today, you can make your own homemade carpet cleaning solution using commonly available ingredients. You will need vinegar or lemon, liquid soap, vinegar, and borax. To create the solution, mix a quart of hot water with a teaspoon of liquid soap, a half teaspoon lemon or vinegar, and a teaspoon of borax. You can even make your own green carpet deodorizer. All you will need is cornmeal and borax. To make it, combine one part borax with two parts cornmeal. Sprinkle the powder onto your carpet and let it sit for one hour. After you let the deodorizer sit, vacuum it up thoroughly.
