Floral curtains span a range of different fabrics, styles, materials, and budgets. Whether you want to add an inexpensive flourish to your bedroom window or a stunning fabric centerpiece to your newly detailed designer digs, floral window curtains satisfy almost any drapery need.
Untailored Floral Curtains
Style: A floral curtain designed to simply hang in front of a window and that has not been made for a specific installation can incorporate some surprisingly upbeat stylish elements. Plain color “tie-backs” and patterned valences are often incorporated which offset the primary pattern of the curtain.
Insulation: Cotton floral curtains, especially those that have an interior lining, provide fairly solid insulation, depending on how closely mounted they are to the window. UV blockage can be iffy.
Durability: Because they are designed for general use, untailored curtains have a fairly rugged durability, and can withstand a fairly vigorous environment without significant damage.
Price: Usually, the least expensive of all floral print curtains.
Tailored Floral Curtains
Style: Designed to precisely fit the dimensions of a particular window frame, with shapes sewn into the fabric to create a more dynamic effect.
Insulation: Much better than untailored curtains, but heavily dependent on the type of fabric and liner the curtains use. Usually, tailored floral print curtains are made from a much richer fabric, such a polyester/cotton blend with a thick cotton liner, and therefore possesses greater insulation properties. UV blockage is determined by the relative thickness of the curtain liner.
Durability: Tailored curtains require a certain amount of maintenance. Because they are designed to fit a particular size and accentuate their shape, roughhousing will quickly take its toll on a tailored curtain.
Price: More expensive than untailored curtains, but far less expensive than custom/designer floral prints.
Custom Floral Prints
Style: Custom floral print curtains can use a practically unlimited variety of materials, including silk. Because of this possible range of materials, custom floral curtains must be categorized by the richly detailed floral patterns they possess.
Insulation: Silk is not a great insulator, and does very little for UV. However, polyester has better insulation properties, and thick cotton has the best. Check the material to determine the curtain’s effectiveness as an insulator.
Durability: Because of the rich nature of the material involved with custom floral prints, these curtains are often extremely sensitive to disturbances in their environment. They will last the longest if they are housed in an environment with very little movement, such as an art gallery or quietly preserved room.
Price: Custom floral window treatments are always the most expensive style available.
