When buying curtains for kids rooms, make your child feel at home, and make the room beautiful, safe, and energy efficient.
Trendy Patterns
When decorating, many people’s first impulse is to buy children’s curtains with patterns of popular cartoon characters or music stars. This is not a good idea, primarily because these curtains grow stale very quickly. Even if your child is heavily into a certain pop group now, it’s likely they will have outgrown that group in a few months or years. For this reason, buying a trendy themed curtain is generally a bad idea. The best children’s curtain is more generic with themes, such as curtains with a pattern of kittens or playground equipment, allows you to decorate in a fun style without having to continually replace the curtains.
Energy Efficiency
Many curtains for kids’ rooms are available pair colored valances with much thinner, translucent curtains. However, while these pairings are beautiful, they are rarely energy efficient. Silky translucent curtains do not retain heat nearly as effectively as thicker, more opaque material, nor do they block UV rays. Young children benefit from having light in the room, so choosing curtains made out of denim, for example, are both fun and far more energy efficient. For daytime use, a translucent curtain that keeps people from seeing in but allows light is okay, as long as you pair that layer with a thicker, energy efficient curtain.
Decorative Effect
Buying energy efficient child curtains does not mean that you automatically have to give up on all superfluous decorative effect. As long as the window itself is insulated, decorative materials above or on the sides of the window, such as the aforementioned valance, will add a certain flair and not impair the overall effectiveness of the curtain. Kids, after all, love color and vibrancy.
Hand Made
Perhaps the most fun option, if you have the time and the patience, is to make your own children bedroom curtains. You and your child can spend time choosing fabrics and designing custom curtains for kids that will mean more to both of you than any store bought curtain ever could. Making patchwork curtains, similar to a quilt, is an excellent way to ornament your child’s window. Whatever fabric you choose, make sure that the underlying material that faces the window is both UV resistant and thick enough to provide adequate insulation. This way, the top layer of the curtain can display as many decorative flourishes as possible, while still saving energy!
