Balloon Curtains | Window Treatments

Billowing balloon curtains feature ruffles, patterns, and a free-flowing sensibility. These curtains are for people who appreciate fun and vibrancy in their décor. Buying the best balloon curtain for your particular set-up is easy as long as you understand the look you’re going for, the insulation properties of the curtain, and of course, just how expensive they are.

Garland Lace Balloon Curtains

Style: Heavily ornamented with multiple layers, garland lace balloon curtain shades are not subtle, but rather demand attention. Made in a ‘gothic’ style, these curtains usually come in vivid colors, such as purple or pink.

Insulation: Generally garland lace is made from polyester or a polyester blend, which makes it a fair insulator. Cotton is the best insulator, but polyester will retain some heat, especially if it is mounted close enough to the window. UV protection is about nil; it’s best not to expect the gossamer thread of garland lace to protect you from the sun.

Durability: The complexity of garland lace makes it difficult to leave untouched for long periods of time. Because there is so much surface area, garland lace needs frequent cleaning to maintain its appearance, and may tear easily or be a target for moths.

Price: Less expensive than Hathaway style balloon curtains.

Hathaway Balloon Curtain

Style: A slightly less complex design than the Garland Lace, with simpler, more elegant patterns, fewer layers, and a more buoyant shape. Although the style should not be termed ‘modern,’ it is newer looking than the Garland Lace.

Insulation: Hathaway balloon shade curtains are also generally made out of polyester, although the extreme thinness and lack of layers makes their insulation properties relatively poor. Garland lace has slightly better insulation. The Hathaway’s thinness makes UV protection non-existent.

Durability: Because they are generally made from one layer, Hathaway Balloon curtains are slightly more durable than their Garland Lace counterparts. However, they can tear or spot, especially if a window is left open overnight and a storm comes through. The appeal of the curtain, namely, the billowing shapes it forms throughout the course of the day, is also a major contributor to its eventual need for repair. The strain of moving back and forth wears on the thin material.

Price: Generally more expensive than Garland Lace curtains.
